Key Goals of the Research
The expert interviews were conducted to understand the attitudes and practices of professionals working with AI in HR, specifically around identifying and mitigating bias in AI systems. By analysing AI use in recruitment and worker management, the study aims to map how AI impacts diversity in hiring and everyday workplace operations.
Participants and Interview Structure
Over six months (from December 2022 to May 2023), 71 experts—35 AI developers and 36 HR managers—were interviewed across eight countries, including Estonia, France, Italy, and Norway. The interviewees included 45 women and 26 men, with sessions held both virtually and in-person. The interviews were designed to cover three main topics: bias in AI systems, AI in recruitment, and AI in managing employees.
Key Findings
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 AI and Bias
One of the study’s main conclusions is that societal biases are often reflected in AI training data, leading to biased outcomes in algorithmic decision-making. However, many companies hesitate to use AI for managing employees due to concerns over privacy, fairness, and cost. A key takeaway from the research is that human intervention is essential—AI should assist rather than control employees, and transparency and human oversight are crucial to its ethical use.
